So sweet is thy discourse: lute songs from Elizabethan & Jacobean England

Lute songs from Elizabethan & Jacobean England
  • Charles Daniels tenor
  • Elizabeth Kenny lute

The genre of the lute song, invented in its mature form by John Dowland in the 1590s, is one of the glories of English Renaissance culture, to be ranked with Shakespeare’s sonnets or Nicholas Hilliard’s miniatures. In this programme they explore this wonderful repertory taking in songs by Dowland, Thomas Morley, Thomas Campion, John Danyel, Robert Johnson and others. Charles Daniels is one of the world’s foremost tenors, with a repertoire extending from the Middle Ages to the twentieth century. He first sang at SVF in 2019, taking the title role in our performance of Monteverdi’s Il ritorno d’Ulisse, and has returned every year since then. Elizabeth Kenny is one of Europe’s leading lutenists, equally distinguished as a soloist, a continuo player and as the director of ensembles.
