Supper Concert Philippa
Hyde & Alison Hill (soprano) A
three-course meal with wine and musical interludes by
Purcell, Handel, J.S. Bach & others Suffolk Villages Festival 2010 The
theme for the Festival will be German music and its
centrepiece the first British performance of C.P.E. Bach's
St Matthew Passion (1769), a work thought lost until it
was rediscovered in Kiev in 1999. Like most Baroque
passions it incorporates music from other settings, in
this case form his father's St Matthew Passion. The other
evening concerts will be devoted to J.S. Bach's cantatas
nos 12, 18, 54 and 199, all written in Weimar in 1714;
music written for the Dresden court orchestra, including
virtuoso violin concertos played by Huw Daniel (who made
his SVF debut in the 2009 supper concert); and an
entertainment in words and music about Frederick the
Great's artistic interests, including extracts from Bach's
Musical Offering. The lunchtime concerts will
feature songs from the early sixteenth century, sung by
John Potter with a consort of viols, and by Schubert and
his contemporaries, sung by Stephen Varcoe with David
Miller (early nineteenth-century guitar). |
